The daycare center was located in the Komplek Sekolah Ahmad Yani. I was a bit nervous at first, but the teachers and children quickly made me feel welcome. The children were energetic and playful, and it was a joy to watch them learn and grow. I helped the teachers with various tasks, such as preparing meals, assisting with homework, and playing games with the children.
For three days, we shared the tasks. The girls were in charge of keeping the children company, while the boys were in charge of helping Mrs. Lugi in the kitchen, preparing the children's meals. At first, I was afraid of feeling awkward around the children. I was afraid they wouldn't like meeting strangers, but the opposite was true. The children welcomed me enthusiastically. Fortunately, my fears were unfounded. I played with them until mealtime. There were several games for them to play, such as puzzles, blocks, and coloring. I accompanied them by helping them build houses, building Lego, and listening to their sometimes absurd but funny stories.
When mealtime arrived, they would wash their hands first. After that, they lined up to get their food. The menu was different every day so the children wouldn't get bored. There was fried rice, soup, and fruit for dessert. After they finished getting their food, they sat at a long table in the middle of the room. I accompanied them while they ate. It turned out that eating with small children was fun. There was always something that could make us laugh, like when one of the children tried to feed me with a spoon or when another child started singing a silly song.
After eating, they lined up to the tap with their cutlery to be washed. Afterward, they went back to playing. My task was complete by then, as it was already 3 p.m. Every time we parted, someone always didn't want me to leave, but I assured them that I would still greet them and play with them again soon. Although tiring, this experience was quite enjoyable and taught me a new life lesson. My usually impatient self became more patient and I tried to be more understanding of others' circumstances. I realized that sometimes, all someone needs is someone to listen to them and play with them. I felt happy knowing that I could make a difference in their day, even if it was just for a short time.
As I reflected on my experience, I realized that it was not just about the children, but also about me. I learned to appreciate the little things in life and to be more present in the moment. I was grateful for the opportunity to serve and to learn from the children. I hoped that I could continue to make a positive impact in the lives of others, just like the children had done for me.
